antiracism ASAP
an association for the anthropology of policy working group

Citations
The practice of citation is deeply political and has consequences both in terms of what knowledge is included as relevant and, indeed, for the career trajectories of Black people, Indigenous Peoples and People of Color, Queer people, and the undocumented, as well as by authors from the Global South scholars who are systematically not cited. A kind of narrow circle of citation in which 'leading' authors tend to cite each other is exclusionary. Anthropology is, of course, not immune from this and, indeed, a rigorous interrogation of its own legacies and how they are embedded in racism and colonialism is needed in order to address the reproduction of racialized inequality within the discipline. The website we are proposing seeks to become one such venue in which this process of interrogation can find a space of expression as well as gain visibility. In terms of ASAP we need to look at the references and sources that we recommend to our members and others both in terms of the themes they address, and which authors are cited, and which are not. In broad brush stroke terms, it is extremely important to both integrate 'race' and racism into the anthropology of policy and to develop specific modules, courses, and reading lists that address racism in policy, across diverse policy domains, as well as referencing struggles for anti-racist policies and practices. It is important that inclusive syllabi include works authored by Black people, Indigenous Peoples and People of Color, Queer people, and the undocumented, as well as by authors from the Global South. It is also important to draw on a global and international literature in order to ensure a truly decolonial syllabus.
